Source of the Zagorska Mrežnica
The spring gushes from the base of the rocks, forming a crystal-clear stream. The place radiates peace and freshness even during the summer months. Interestingly, this area was once home to prehistoric animals, as evidenced by discovered elephant and rhinoceros teeth.
Right next to the spring stands an impressive stone bridge built during Napoleon’s rule, named after Marshal Marmont. The bridge is very well preserved and provides a perfect backdrop for photographs amid the lush greenery.
Just a few minutes’ walk from the spring lies Šmitovo Lake, nestled in a deep forested depression. It is known for its incredible turquoise color and the legend of a dragon that guarded the lake until it was driven away by Saint George. Wooden benches around the lake make it a perfect spot to rest in peace and quiet.
Hiking: Marked trails connect the spring, the bridge, and Šmitovo Lake.
To fully experience the fairytale atmosphere, a visit in spring—when the water flow is strongest—or in autumn—when the surrounding forests display their most beautiful colors—is recommended. For more information about the sites, visit the official website of the Ogulin Tourist Board.
