Đula’s Abyss or Dobra River Sinkhole
In the very center of the town of Ogulin lies a remarkable hydrogeological natural monument. Flowing through the heart of the town, the Dobra River ends its course by plunging beneath steep rocky cliffs into a vast opening known as Đula’s Abyss. Together with the Medvedica Cave, it forms the longest speleological system in Croatia, with a total explored length of 15,701 meters.
The name of the abyss is tied to the legend of Đula (or Zulejka), a young woman who threw herself into the chasm because of a tragic love. Nature itself seems to have completed this legend — on the rock face, one can clearly see the profile of a man, said by locals to be Captain Milan gazing toward the place where his beloved Đula disappeared.
Imagine the feeling of knowing that beneath the town lies a magnificent world of stone formations carved by water over millennia.
The rocky cliffs of the abyss also attract climbers eager to test their skills.
