Šmitovo jezero
Around the source of the Zagorska Mrežnica lies the picturesque village of Zagorje, mentioned as early as 1486 in the Modruš Urbar. Today, most of Ogulin is supplied with water from the Zagorska Mrežnica spring. Numerous streams inhabited by crayfish and various fish species, along with lakes, ponds, unusual rock formations, and views of the “Ogulin Sea,” create an unforgettable experience.
The largest lake is Šmitovo Lake, tied to a local legend in which St. George saved a maiden from a dragon, and the imprint of a horse’s hoof can still be seen on a stone by the lake.
As in other parts of Ogulin, there are several caves here as well. The most famous is Rupećica, where the olm (proteus) was discovered.
An old legend says that a dragon once lived in the lake. On one occasion, it leapt out and captured a young maiden. Just then, St. George appeared and freed the frightened girl from the dragon’s embrace. Near the lake, there is a stone that still bears the “imprint” of St. George’s horse’s hoof.
