Description

In King Tomislav Park, which today shows only a partial foundation in Classicism (planned and realized in the 18th century), there is a monument to King Tomislav, erected on the thousandth anniversary of the kingdom. The monument was built according to the design of Slovenian architect Vitburg Meck. It was restored in 1990.

Additional information

Tomislav was the duke of Littoral Croatia from around 910, and it is traditionally considered that he became king in 925, as Pope John X addressed him that year in a letter written in Latin as Tamisclao, regi Crouatorum, which translates to “king of the Croats.” Compared to some earlier and later Croatian rulers, relatively little is known with certainty about Tomislav.
